If you’ve got a steel shed in your backyard, you most probably have been thinking what you can do with it so it won’t look so industrial. Perhaps, you already hate looking at it sometimes, because it ruins your garden that’s supposed to complement your house design. Steel shed plans usually specify structures that really look so utilitarian when finished. But you don’t have to despair. Small touch-ups here and there will do the trick.
A Couple of Handy Tips
First of all, you need to make sure that your steel shed is always clean. A steel shed itself is enough to make your garden not so pleasing to the eyes; an old, rusty, and dirty one makes things even worse. Home improvement experts recommend trisodium phosphate, more commonly known in stores as TSP, to clean the exterior of your steel shed. TSP, which comes in the form of white grains or crystals, is usually mixed with water to make a cleaning solution. It’s generally applied using a scrub. However, it would be best to check the usage instructions on the label of the TSP product that you’ll buy.
Most probably, you’d want to paint your metal shed, especially if it’s already been in your yard for quite some time. Before you paint the whole shed, though, check if there are portions that are rusting. You need to sand and prime those areas first before painting. Choose a paint color that will match your garden.
If you’re into some carpentry work, you can plan about adding windows or making them over. You can also change the door to give more character to your shed. You can create a completely modern, industrial design for your shed with PVC materials for your windows, door, and door frame. But you can make a mix of contrasts by putting windows and doors made of timber.
Accessorize Your Steel Shed
If you already have windows and a door in good condition, you can just paint them. If you wish, you can go bold and paint them in colors that are a perfect contrast to the color of the shed itself. You can also change to your liking the doorknobs, locks, and hinges. You can also add shutters to your windows.
Since it’s in your garden, put plants and other landscape materials that will match the rest of your garden. Make a walkway leading to your steel shed. Line the walkway with plants and even lights that complement the other elements in your garden.
Many more home accessories and outdoor decorations can be added to your steel shed to prevent it from sticking out badly in your garden. Check out home improvement stores for wind vanes, chimes, roof trims, moldings, and other materials that you can easily add to make it match your entire property.
